On this week's episode of Bookworm, Michael Silverblatt talks to Dave Eggers about What is the What:
... I really want to tell this broad picaresque and tell it in a voice ... give Valentino the benefit of the full English language and then try to use lots of different colors and speeds and lighter moments ... [kcrw]
The book has been sitting on my nightstand for weeks barely read, mostly because I'd think about reading before going to sleep and deciding that the atrocities of the Sudan civil war weren't exactly bedtime material. The interview inspired me to tackle another hundred pages; Silverblatt always asks fascinating questions and adds deeply thoughtful commentary and it was interesting to hear Dave Eggers talk about how he turned someone else's autobiography into a novel.
