this isn't a podcast

When I bought the two new Bright Eyes albums, I pretty much knew that I'd be more inclined to like I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning more than Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. My guess was that I like Bright Eyes in organic rather than synthetic form. And for the most part, I think that my expectations were on target. I like my laptop-pop a little glitchier and swirly, all the better to let us ignore the sappy lyrics (Postal Service, anyone?). And I say this as someone who's generally a fan of Conor Oberst's tortured youth lyrics because I believed them, at least as heartfelt stories, and because I occasionally like to hear people's introspective ramblings (livejournal, anyone?).

That said, I really like "Easy/Lucky/Free" [mp3] from Digital Ash in a Digital Urn a lot.

update: you can hear a whole live Bright Eyes (with Tilly and the Wall, rhythm section = tap dancer!) concert on Saturday at 9:30 pm EST courtesy of public radio. [npr]

This post brought to you by a day of class, swimming, and quality time at the office.

I know! Complete overexposure. I was browsing the magazine rack at the bookstore today and you can't turn around without running into full page photos of him.

I think that everyone was taken by surprise with Lifted: Or the story is in the soil, keep your ear to the ground and wanted to be on board early this time. Plus, a double album release is pretty publicity generating.
