olympics & politics!

my two favorite topics of the moment collide in this Sports Illustrated interview with members of the inspirational Iraqi soccer team:
"Iraq as a team does not want Mr. Bush to use us for the presidential campaign," Sadir told

[midfielder] Ahmed Manajid ... had an even stronger response ... "How will he meet his god having slaughtered so many men and women? He has committed so many crimes." [si]

Somewhere in this story is the unpleasant contradiction that these players, trained under the evil regime, made it to the games while the American team did not. I mean, it's not as if our military intervention somehow caused them to be good soccer players.
