Though I'm not sure that the essay ever comes together to say anything deeply meaningful, the following topics are mentioned and discussed in "The believers" published in the Guardian:
Dave Eggers, David Foster Wallace, Zadie Smith, Nick Horby, artist cliques of the past and present, non-branding as branding, McSweenification, the Believer, earnestness and post-irony, the triumph of aural culture in literature, Pabst Blue Ribbon.

I can't really tell if the tone of the article is snarky or just British (or both?). The article is mildly long, but for that list alone, it's probably worth reading.
