I won the big Oscar guessing competition and took home a bottle of Scooby Doo bubble bath. For a while, I thought that I was out of the running when Elena took an early lead, but with 13 out of 24 I won in the end. I picked all of the actors & best film awards correctly. I think the biggest surprises were the 8 Mile song winning best original song and Roman Polanski winning best director. Except for Michael Moore, most of the speeches were either tasteful or unremarkable.
I also feel justified in not having seen Gangs of New York, which I avoided because it looked like it would just be a bunch of dirty people cutting each other.
Other than the awards, the hanging out was fun and we had good food and beverages. Several people commented on the logic of seeing a depressing war movie to avoid watching a depressing war on television, but I think it turned out to be a good choice.
