It's hard to take a good picture if the mist, let alone with a cellycam, but trust that everything looked extra eerie and beautiful tonight.
This was on a walk back from the theater after seeing Slumdog Millionaire. As the year draws to a close, I've been feeling a bit of a mad rush to find a movie that I love the very most in 2008. I don't know if this (or Milk, which I saw on Friday) is it, but I did like it very much.
SPOILERISH, if you're sensitive: The structure lets you know early on that you're likely to be in for a fairy tale with the requisite happy ending, but that you'll have to go through a lot of bumps to get there. In typical Danny Boyle fashion, it is all over the top and intense and strangely gorgeous, not completely believable but totally surrenderable, and it ends with a big check and a dance scene. In spite of the grim set-up, it ends like the feel-good movie of the year and you feel OK about the ride. It also helped that I was primed to like the main character because the actor also plays Anwar on Skins, an excellent teen drama whose first series ends like this [youtube]. It's my new favorite current catch-up TV fascination.
