hiding under a rock

update: Although I haven't read the article, it looks like Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince already has a positive review from Michiko Kakutani [nyt]. Did she get the book at midnight and stay up all night reading it?

For what it's worth, I don't yet have the new Harry Potter. Not because I'm concerned about the "subtle seductions which act unnoticed and by this deeply distort Christianity in the soul" [cnn], but because my devotion to consistency compelled me to order from amazon.co.uk again.

I thought about walking down to the bookstore to see if any actual children showed up for the book release party, but realized that I'd probably buy an extra copy if I went and thought that I'd be better off not purchasing it twice.

Although I still realize that it's Harry will likely be the subject of a murderous plot, compete for and win a prize, and end up in hospital,1 I'll try my best to avoid all of your spoilers until my copy arrives.

(1) I suppose this expectation [-2.5y] should probably be revised/updated to include participation in a dramatic fight against evil. After all, the series is maturing.

ah, book leave

Did everyone already know that Sarah Vowell has been writing Op-Ed columns for the New York Times while Maureen Dowd is on "book leave"?

    omj - horse edition

perhaps you heard about the Seattle man who died after having sex with a Enumclaw horse [seattletimes]? On the Stranger weblog, Dan Savage interprets the latest report of the incident and points out the horrible truth:
When I heard that a man died after having sex with a horse, I assumed that the horse in question had kicked the man for attempting to mount and penetrate said horse. I assumed the horse was female. This was not the case. The man died . . . of a perforated colon. [slog]
Just when you think that bestiality isn't gross enough, more and more awful details keep getting revealed. And the best/worst part is that no one's even sure if what happened was illegal!
