Salon's 10 best movies of 2003, by Stepahnie Zacharek [ and others.] I mention this mainly because she's my favorite / most-trusted critic. I doubt that I would've even seen (or been as excited to see) Fellowship of the Rings if it hadn't been for her review. And, of course, it is a good list.

Lacuna Inc.

Even if I didn't know that Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind [see the trailer] was written by Charlie Kaufman, I realized why I'd probably still be excited about seeing it.

The trailer is remarkably reminiscent of the last commercial that I fell in love with (for the New Beetle): it features a version of the same ELO song ("Mr. Blue Sky") and lots of GrooveTube-ish changing rectangles. I guess I'm an easy mark for ad wizards.

Anyway, an early version of the screenplay is posted at BeingCharlieKaufman [.txt]; the movie won't be out until the 19th of March. For tonight, I guess I'll rent Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.

in the air

For non-local readers who didn't know,

It's been snowing on-and-off for the past couple of days here. From giant white flakes yesterday morning to misty snowdust this afternoon, to the traditional snow-globe action outside my window now, it seems like the ground should be blanketed. But this is polite Seattle snow that only seems to hang out for a few hours before melting or washing away, disappearing before it gets dirty. It exists for effect rather than for drifting.

Maybe I'm underestimating. I've mostly been observing through the window from under a blanket in my freezing cold apartment. But from that perspective and during brief walks for errands, it's been simultaneously charming and unsettling.
