when i drink i don't panic

yesterday was killing time until techfee, a meeting, and reading articles about microarrays at solstice until it was time for happy hour at Big Time. Two expanded tables of people attended, which was heartening.

After about an hour of happiness, Rachel, Jon, and I went to Benaroya Hall to get rush tickets for the Seattle Symphony's performance of Ravel's Bolero. I am not necessarily the biggest fan of the symphony, but it's hard to argue with that first moment when everyone is quiet and then the air is suddenly full of vibrations like a giant flock of birds taking flight. That said, none of the other pieces were particularly memorable, but they were all pleasant and it is fun to have gone to the symphony.

A largeish middle-aged woman in one of the boxes, dressed in black with a gold belt and probably drunk off her mind, was humorously enthusiastic for each performance. She clapped theatrically, stretching herself over the edge of her seat and occasionally blew kisses to the performers and clasped her hands to her chest, overcome with emotion.

We drove around for a while trying to think of something to do. Eventually, we settled on renting Groundhog Day.

so far

has anyone else noticed that Saturday morning cartoons are getting stranger and stranger. This morning, Tim and I watched a show about a girl who goes to therapy to deal with her obsession with a boy in her class. The show is called Hey Arnold and all of the kids have really weird-shaped heads. On another channel, there was a kids news broadcast that covered nuclear weapons in North Korea (80% of their survey respondents are "very concerned", only 12% weren't aware of the situation), Elf, & Tony Hawk. It was like a well-financed Mrs. Houston project.

Other than that, I've been doing laundry. It is taking forever.

In a couple of hours, I'm going to the University Bookstore to see David Rees, the author of Get Your War On and other funny things.. It's at 4 pm.
