consumer culture

I didn't do much this weekend except for consume media. On Friday, there was the CD buying (Spoon - Kill the Moonlight; Automaton - Clarions and Banners; Cibo Matto - Viva! La Woman; The Microphones - It Was Hot We Stayed In The Water). So far, I don't have any strong opinions about them, except that I think they're each pretty good in different ways.

My uncle is visiting Seattle next week; so I felt like I should read the book that he gave me earlier this summer, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It is a fable about following your dream. It was nice, but I didn't really draw any especially deep meanings from it. However, the illustrations by Moebius were pretty great. One depicted the protagonist smoking the hookah with a merchant.

I'm leaving for North Carolina later this week and wanted to stock up on reading materials. I went to buy the new Sarah Vowell book, The Partly Cloudy Patriot, and saw that Middlesex had been released; so I bought both. Oh, and I found Looper - The Snare in the used CD bin at Tower.

I'm disappointed that I'll miss Sarah Vowell's visit by a few hours, but I guess I can make up for it by reading her book on the plane... except I'll probably finish before then. If so, maybe I can find someone to take it to the book signing?
