quadorama / thursday

After class yesterday I succumbed to the draw of the cherry blossom gawking experience on the quad. It was sunny and since I was auditing the class I didn't see the point of staying around to provide an evaluation. I was not the target audience, anyway.

Per usual, the cherry trees are fantastic and beautiful and the grass was covered with people soaking up the view and the early afternoon weather.

After a few hours of quality time at the office, I met Carole and Atri to watch a free screening of Milions. This one was also about motherless children, but without the bleak outlook of Nobody Knows. It has the same director & cinematographer & original music team as 28 Days Later (Danny Boyle, Anthony Dod Mantle, and John Murphy, respectively); and was not surprisingly great looking and sounding.

I'm not entirely sure what to make of the plot -- a surreal fairy tale in which motherless Britons find a bag of Pounds a week before the conversion to the Euro, heartwarmingness ensues -- but it was kind of an enjoyably crazy ride. What can I say? I'm a sucker for flashy visuals.

I thought Millions looked like a big departure for Danny Boyle, I don't know if I want to see it, since he is one of my favorite directors. Did it have any "Boyle-ness" in it, or was it far off?
It was much less sappy than I thought it would be freom the trailer.

I think this means that it had enough Boyle-ness. There are lots of neat visual tricks, goofy fantasy elements, good music, some suspenseful elements. So it wasn't that far off.
I liked the music and that little kid was adorable. I'm sure I'll end up seeing it anyway..
It got the coveted two thumbs up; so how can you possibly go wrong.

Especially given the spring movie competition it seems like a pretty good bet.
